DJ Babu – Reason Workflow

DJ Babu of Dilated Peoples, Beat Junkies and Liquid Junkies fame gives a public demo of his Reason beatmaking techniques at the 2007 NAMM show. Like many other hip hop producers from the golden age, Babu started out with hardware, so the life-like look and workflow in Propellerheads Reason appealed to him. What’s interesting about this presentation is that his producer mindset is ‘making records from records’, so he’s basically showing off his chops like other would do with their MPCs, SP404s or SP1200s. He picks a dope spanish records to sample the meldoy from, loops a drum break and adds a bass line to recreate an absolute banger. Here’s part one and two of his workshop:
