The German plugin developers Cableguys released a new plugin called HalfTime, which gives you instant access to a currently popular production technique. Now it’s super simple to setup these slowed down half-speed effects and enter a world of spaced-out sound ala Bryson Tiller, OVO, Weeknd, etc.
HalfTime transforms any audio into a dark, downtempo version of itself, giving your tracks huge mood and atmosphere. Lead synths mutate into heavyweight EDM bass monsters. Plinky piano lines become haunting trap melodies. Percussion thickens, expanding to reveal new rhythmic possibilities.
Just add the plugin for an instant half-speed effect with zero setup, but don’t let the simple and intuitive interface fool you. The plugin gives you enough flexibility to tweak the sound to fit your production. The plugin is dope for getting inspiration in seconds and it’s a steal at $12!
One of the coolest features is the Power button, which makes it easy to fit HalfTime into your tracks. By default it functions as a simple bypass, but you can easily add up 16 bars as intro and outro, so the effect can slowly creep in and out of your beat. This saves you drawing in fiddly automation in your DAW – super dope!
Another time saver is the band split feature, which lets you effect the lows, mids or highs seperately. Great if you want to leave the bass untouched, but fatten midrange percussion slightly and completely flip your top-end on its head! Again, that’s all possible in your DAW, but to have everything you need at your fingertips when dialing in the right amount of the effect is huge in my books!
The actual speed is dialed in with three modes, which give you drastically different results. You can go from slightly shuffling 1.5x rhythm & perfect fifth harmonies to complete drugged-out 4x playback with a mouse click. You can then further play with the loop length to find the groove that fits your track.
Based on the first few hours of use, I’ve found that HalfTime is largely based on Cableguys’ excellent TimeShifter plugin, which instantly struck a chord with me when I discovered it a few months ago. As an Ableton user I was looking for an intuitive plug like FL Studio’s GrossBeat for a long time. I tried a few similar ones but none stuck for me until I found TimeShifter. And when I heard that members of 808 Mafia already use HalfTime in their productions and even EDM artists like Armin van Buuren, David Guetta and The Chemical Brothers are amongst it’s fans, I had to check it out.
Let me tell you: HalfTime doesn’t disappoint. Sure, you can achieve the effect with other means, but when you’re in production mode anything that gives you on-point results in half the time (see what I did there?) or less, is pure gold. If you’re producing Trap, Pop or R’n’B this is simply a must purchase.
The timestretching aka halftiming would have been enough to warrant the small price tag of $12, but add the multiband functionaltiy and other options and you’ve got yourself a serious must-buy recommendation!
