HY-Lofi2 Covers Your Lo-Fi VST Needs
Rekkerd releases a straightforward Lo-Fi Effect with four different distortion variants, which is a free download for Windows & Mac.
This new Lo-Fi VST is an audio processing effect that gives any audio a lo-fi character by combining a bitcrusher, a distortion unit, a high pass and a low pass filter. It’s the new and improved version of the original HY-Lofi plug-in.
The interface has stayed almost the same and offers almost the same controls except for a few customizations. A new addition to the plugin is the Dry / Wet control, which lets you easily apply the effect with parallel signal processing. Then there are two new quantization modes and an input gain control in HY-Lofi2. As part of the changes and to improve the overall workflow the drive-shaper was omitted from the drive section for the update. While the Lo-Fi VST definitely kept its look, a new color scheme was implemented alongside newly designed buttons and sliders.
The plugin has a dedicated filter range including highpass and lowpass filters for the usual frequency adjustments. At the the top of the tool you’ll find a preset manager and a bypass switch. The user interface can also be completely resized, which is always nice if you have many plugins displayed on screen.
Nice & Dirty Lo-Fi VST
HY-Lofi2 is really simple but effective Lo-Fi VST at the one thing it is supposed to do. Send any signal into the plugin and out comes a processed signal with something most people call “Dirt”.
Thanks to the bit reduction module, you have access to four different distortion variants. The first mode is quite subtle, while in the second quantization errors occur primarily at higher frequencies. Modes three and four are almost like of the previous modes but more extreme versions of them. You can really crush the sound here, from shrill and scratching to dark and torn sound – anything is possible here!
If you like the character of your sound, but it’s too in your face, then you can always tame the sound with the excellent filter sections to make it sit better in the mix.
