Recently a friend of mine posted videos on Instagram in which he created dope drone sounds in an app called Tardigrain. I haven’t heard of the app before, but I liked the sound of it and the interface was very reminiscent of one of my all-time favourite apps SMPLR (still working, but sadly no updates in ages).
So, Tardigrain is a granular synthesizer that runs standalone or as an AU plugin in DAWs like Cubasis or Beatmaker3. The sounds are created by splitting a sample into tiny fragments and playing them back in a non linear fashion. For this you can tweak things like grain size, direction, step size and more. Furthermore you can process the sound with built-in effects like reverb, wave shaper and sample crush. Here’s a little taste of what can be achieved:
As for connectivity: Tardigrain supports AudioCopy, AudioBus, Inter App Audio and AUv3. Plus all audio parameters can be modulated via Midi, as AU parameters and by aftertouch on the build in keyboard.
